It was named for DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor that built the Erie Canal; he was also a U.S. Senator from New York before that. It has no connection whatsoever to Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States and an Arkansas governor before that, or to his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton, who also became a U.S. Senator from New York.
